  • I don’t understand what your argument is. Obviously we can’t report on or care about every single person on the planet, regardless of how deserving they may be.

There is only room in our attention span for the occasional placeholder to care about outside our immediate social circle and family, and we are also naturally inclined to the concept of fame.

So there will always be people of a certain fame who draw the attention of the masses. May it be politicians, celebrities, fucking billionaire scum, scientists, “influencers”, and so forth.

I still don’t think it is morally appropriate to dismiss or talk bad about someone who is struggling with a potentially terminal illness, regardless of if they are famous or not.

  • I deleted several thousand comments and multiple posts in niche gaming subs I wrote over the years, all of high quality. My knowledge and contributions don’t belong to spez or reddit, or the internet for that matter. Eventually those niche communities will move someplace else, and I’ll be happy to contribute there again.

Personally I believe that large parts of this discussion and topic are simply human nature.

Any group with power, will seek to keep that power, and to increase their standing over the other people. If history had played out differently and asian or black people were the historical in-group we would have the exact same situations and issues as we have today. Only another enemy.

  • I read a pretty brutal analysis by a financial expert on some business magazine site. My biggest takeaways were:

    • new shares get 1 vote per share, existing shareholders 10 per share
    • under the rules they are doing the ipo they can skip providing solid numbers for the last years, and are unbound by board opinion on how much money can go into executive compensation and golden parachute packages.

Now I’m not an investor at all but this rings so many grift alarm bells I don’t understand why anyone would buy that shit. Seems like a completely dubious investment set up to pay out spez and then collapse.

  • Well, if you knew that for the rest of your life you would have a home, clothing, food and water, internet and some spending money, what would you do with your time?

Many people would probably just relish doing nothing productive at all, like most animals in nature do when they have no immediate needs.

All that free time would probably inspire a renaissance of art and philosophy, probably personal education too, after all, you can do plenty of thinking on various topics if you have all day to do whatever you are in the mood for. But ultimately we would still need a real outlet for our creative and constructive urges, a way to meaningfully occupy our time.

Ultimately we would need a true common cause again that everyone can share in, like Starfleet in Trek is for mankind. A new frontier, exploration and discovery like humanity has not known since we first started sailing our oceans to seek out the unknown. And not just for elite astronauts, for everyone.

  • Depends on your level of introspection. A really average dude with a mediocre lifestyle and interests might very well think that a woman who checks all the boxes is either out of reach or will inevitably grow disappointed being with a very plain guy who “can’t keep up” so to say.
