His name is Taco Ockerse. He did a cover of Puttin’ on the Ritz in the 80s. That’s it, that’s the whole joke. sigh I’ll never get those 5 minutes back.

You say that now, but some day you’ll be at a social gathering with a bunch of GenX-ers and Boomers, and you’ll need an anecdote that they will both relate to, in a way that won’t infuriate either of them…and you’ll have this particular musical trivia fact, in your back pocket.

You can go ahead and thank me, when that happens.

If I tell you (especially in the title or the meme itself), it still won’t be funny to you. But it would also be less funny to the people who DO know. So the math just doesn’t work out, for me to mention his name.

So do a reverse image search or something, then come back.

I never knew that was actually the guy’s real name. I thought it was just a band name or something.

I just learned that recently, too, which led directly to making the meme. A cursory, surface level of Google research has left me unable to determine whether Taco is some kind of traditional name, on either his Dutch or his Indonesian side, or if his folks really decided to name him after the food.

If he is named after the food, I hope he decides on cremation, for his final disposal. That way, he would be a soft Taco for his whole life, then eventually become a crispy Taco.

EDIT: just a couple days later, I also learned that fellow one-hit-wonder Eagle-Eye Cherry is ALSO REALLY NAMED THAT NAME, ON HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE. He had a single big hit with that song “Save Tonight,” back in the 90s. I always thought it was the name of the band, same as with ol’ Taco.
