I began using Lemmy abruptly after quitting Reddit after the API fiasco of last year. With the third party apps on Lemmy like Voyager (lol), picking up the slack.

People don’t give a shit what service or server it’s hosted on, as long as it’s free and they can continue to interact with other users, because that’s ultimately, what matters, the community.

If you were having a party with some friends watching the Superbowl and some random corporate ass clowns came in and said: “Pack it up, we’re charging you for the privilege of talking to each other and also we’re selling your conversations on the Internet”, you’d give them a swift kick in the ass.

The content is yours, you made it, you spent the effort, the mental energy, the loss of actual lifetime to create it, post it, and share it with the world.

I used to suffer from clinical depression, and part of that I believe is because I used food as a coping mechanism to deal with inescapable stress and other pressures of toxic hyper-capitalist society (basically like anyone else with a substance abuse problem, except my substance was pizza).

Eating pizza every day, makes you fat. Being fat, makes life harder in general, you weigh more, are constantly fatigued, doing simple actions requires more effort, and dating is well - I mean, it’s tougher.

Add the depression on top of that and it’s like those jokes: “Sick, fat, lonely and tired.” A recipe for disaster.

I began working out, but the word is wrong. I began training. I didn’t follow the same policies and procedures of the lethally infirm/sick society that made me sick in the first place, but I went and struck it out on my own.

I went to the outskirts of the city, to No Man’s Land, and I cycled in the mid afternoon summer’s heat, 4-5 hours at a time.

I know what you’re thinking, “where does someone find the time to cycle 4-5 hours a day while holding down a job for 8 hours as well” and the answer is, your instinctual response to this tells you everything you need to know about how our society is organized and how we approach diet, exercise, and living in general.

I didn’t “work out”. I didn’t “exercise” to look good. I didn’t meticulously drive 3 miles to an air conditioned gym to run 3 miles in place on a fucking rolling machine.

I crawled through the gaping maw of hell and emerged the other side, intact. Alive, and without the depression around my ankles.

So yeah, it helped. :)

I recall it being an argument in a high school debate club or someother which made it’s way onto 4chan and found supporters, who then proceeded to do what 4chan does best, and troll people/targets of their derision. Basically they assumed no one was stupid enough to believe it and were shockingly surprised.

TLDR: Car battery is 350Wh. Fridge uses 143W idle, so it’ll run a fridge for 2-3 hours.

Explanation below:

Car batteries are lead-acid (sulphuric acid and lead plates).

They discharge according to Peukert’s Law as the negatively charged plate gets covered in lead via the acid (electrolyte).

As the battery depletes, the negative plate can begin to take permanent damage, and so you can’t discharge a lead-acid deeper than 10-20%, or about 10.8V, with the safe limit being ~50% discharge.

Most 12V, 60Ah batteries therefore only safely store and nominally discharge 350 Wh @ 350W.

You can discharge that as fast as you want but the faster you discharge, the lower the capacity is (with 1000-1500W bringing you way down to like 65 Wh). Fridges have a surge when they start up to fire up the compressor. Starter batteries can take that, but once the refrigerant is cold, the fridge just maintains the temperature which uses a lot less energy - about 143W on average.

I once had one of those crypto-people message me with a sales pitch, asking for money to help start their small business in Africa or something like that (can’t remember what, I think it was a micro-brewery)

As an actual business owner, their initial ideas sounded okay, and I began forwarding them resources on how to secure a low-interest loan from their government and grants and stuff like that and then they abruptly closed up with:

“This is scam, brother. This is scam. You have good heart. I tell you only once, do not message this number.”

The Animatrix (prequel) goes into further detail as to why the machines did it – it’s an act of mercy for their creators. They refused to fight humanity, and it was mankind who darkened the skies, in an attempt to disable the solar power that the machine race relied upon.

It’s not a prison, or some kind of torture device, or an experiment, but a way for humanity to continue living on a world that they made uninhabitable for themselves / incompatible with organic life.

What the Matrix is, is actually a distributed simulation MATRIX that uses individual human brains as nodes in a shared, hallucinogenic dream, indistinguishable from reality.

The real simulation isn’t so primitive, it doesn’t require people to be popsicle tubes in some crazy dystopian cyberpunk black and red tower attended by insectoid robots.

Instead the entire universe is contained on a single state machine, compromising a [redacted] amount of memory, running in [redacted]. Simulants are never aware of being inside of the simulation, except for rare instances where outsiders occasionally post on Lemmy.
