  • Falconry would be the worst midlife crisis because you have to be so serious about it. They don’t fuckin play - you have to do a 2 year apprenticeship under a more experienced falconer before you can be on your own. You can’t even get a bird until you’ve taken a test, built facilities, bought all the equipment, and passed an inspection. You can’t be like, “hold up, I’ll be back in a few years with a falcon and then I’m starting a cult, just be patient.” That’s not a crisis, that’s going to bird college.

(Full disclosure, everything I know about falconry came from a Winter Soldier fanfic, but I just looked and it’s all true. And very intense.)

  • There are many, many Christians who abuse their kids under the guise of godliness. Ever heard of “To Train Up a Child”? It’s a whole book about how to properly abuse your child to turn them into a mindless, obedient slave. They start hitting them as infants for showing curiosity. There are popular Christian influencers who have openly spoken about the ways they “discipline” their kids - one said her husband “doesn’t know his own strength” with their kids. Aka he’s beaten the shit out of them more than once. Sure, Ruby Franke turned it up to 11, but she and her husband routinely abused their children and were public about it for years, and plenty of people saw no problem with it and continued to consume their content.

I’d argue it’s not mental illness, it’s the natural consequence of practicing a branch of Christianity that doesn’t see children as people, just little trophies who aren’t meant to have any personality, needs, or wants. They’re supposed to parrot everything their parents believe and otherwise not be seen or heard.

  • That’s why I have zero tolerance for the idea that we should just be able to disagree politely about politics and still be friends afterward. Sure, if the disagreement is about how much of a city’s budget should go toward parks vs. street maintenance or something, but when “some people aren’t really people because they’re from another country” is the politics, that’s gonna be a hard no for me. Trump supporters contribute nothing positive to politics (and probably not much to the world, considering how they view it) and I’m not interested in some fake ass “dialogue.”

  • Eh, maybe, but native plants tend to be a way better option for new gardeners because they grow so much better. My mom and I tore out all the grass in our front yard and put in native plants and they’re the first plants I didn’t manage to immediately kill. If I’d tried roses, they probably would’ve died and I’d have given up. Instead, I have catmint thriving maybe a little too much and it’s full of bees!

  • I just don’t know why I keep clicking on the memes. I don’t know anything about Linux, I know I’m not gonna get it, but I keep opening them and being confused. It’s like when I try to understand the code in programmer humor like it’s suddenly gonna click. Or ich_iel. I don’t speak German. What was up with all the noodles? I still don’t know!

I stg, 80% of my time on this site is just clicking stuff I know will confuse me but I can’t stop.

  • I work in a passport office, and any time a guy comes in alone to apply and says he’s going to the Philippines, without exception, he’s exactly what you’d picture. Some have been pretty upfront about getting married while they’re there (one guy showed me a picture and said, “look what I’m marrying,” and I’m really proud for not screaming at his phrasing) and some try to keep it stealthy, but it’s pretty obvious. We’re not sending our best is all I can say.
