gedaliyah@lemmy.worldto Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•And the most popular man in the whole Fediverse is...English1440·1 year agoCalm down there achi. You’re coming in with a lot of pretty unnecessary defensive energy. I’m just letting people know about some language that is harmful to a vulnerable minority in case they want to avoid it. You feel free to do with that information what you need.
gedaliyah@lemmy.worldto Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•And the most popular man in the whole Fediverse is...English15·1 year agothey can already do that really. Most of what you can do on the fediverse is essentially public.
gedaliyah@lemmy.worldto Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•And the most popular man in the whole Fediverse is...English17109·1 year agoSo, when you remove what I assume is an announcement bot and lizard people from the equation, the answer is George Takei? Yeah, that sounds about right.
I don’t like threads at all, but referring to Mark Zuckerberg and Adam Mosseri as “lizard people” is pretty antisemitic, especially since they are both Jewish people.
I’m guessing that you were unfamiliar with this antisemitic dogwhistle, but I also understand that’s the point of a dogwhistle - It doesn’t sound racist unless you already know about it.

Well, those pregnancy hormones can bring on some unhinged thought patterns but this is Disney villain levels.
gedaliyah@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Meta just showed off Threads’ fediverse integration for the very first timeEnglish1217·1 year agoDefederate.
They can have a corporate silo. They can use an open standard. But they cannot do anything good for the fediverse. The best thing for the fediverse is to let them exist as a walled garden (and we can put up the wall).
There are about 10 million users on the free fediverse. That number has grown steadily and sustainably. There are 160 million threads users. They were instantaneously leveraged onto the platform by a billion dollar corporation (possibly in violation of antitrust laws).
If we federate, Threads won’t become a part of the fediverse; threads will become the fediverse.

If someone wants to add an additional, more expensive ingredient, then they can pay for it.

gedaliyah@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do straight lines and flat planes exist in nature?English5·1 year agoYes, nature is not objective - it is relative. Mathematics is a discipline that is based around an objective framework. Lines and planes are mathematical constructs. Mathematics gives us an objective framework that can be used to model a natural world, but they are just models.
Some things are “line-like” or “plane-like,” in that modeling them as lines or planes is helpful to describe them. You can measure a distance “as the bird flies” because birds fly in lines compared to how humans travel along roads and paths. You can describe a dense, heavy, falling object as traveling in a straight line, because air resistance may be negligible over short distances.
A model is only useful insofar as it accurately represents reality. Lines and planes are mathematical constructs, and they may be incorporated into models that describe real things. “A beam of light crossing a room travels in a straight line” is probably a useful construct because the effects of gravity and refraction of the air are probably negligible for nearly all purposes. “The surface of a pond is a plane” is probably an acceptable model for a cartographer, since the height of ripples and the curvature of the earth are negligible at that scale.
The initial question was not “Do straight lines and flat planes model anything in nature,” but whether they exist in nature. They do not. They only exist in mathematics.

It seemed obvious to us and other observers that the election was orderly and peaceful and that there was a clear preference for Hamas candidates even in historically strong Fatah communities. Even so, we were all surprised at the enormity of the Hamas victory.
gedaliyah@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do straight lines and flat planes exist in nature?211·1 year agoWhy ask a pedantic question and be upset by a pedantic answer?
gedaliyah@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do straight lines and flat planes exist in nature?181·1 year agoNo, they are mathematical constructs. Everything in nature is composed of matter and the like, so there are no perfectly straight lines or flat planes.
Even a beam of light curves and refracts as it interacts with matter and space over a long enough distance.
I have a cannon at home. It was super cheap and super reliable, and no possibility for an internet connection.
