Asklemmy is meant for open ended discussion questions, whereas this seems better for askScience or something similar

The potential issues:

• this was enabled for everyone by default instead of being opt-in
• It’s hard to tell what will be blocked by this. “Activism” is political. Calling out tech oligopolies is “political”, and by extension advertising the fediverse could be “political”. This could be an easy way to hide content that harms Meta or its partners.
• It encourages users and content creators to avoid controversial topics. It’s hard to fix issues in our communities if we don’t talk about them

The fact that Meta is doing this makes me suspicious. Here in Canada, they booted off news organizations and now instead of reputable organizations sharing what’s happening, that niche is filled by other… content.

I personally try to avoid any suggested content and only use my subscriptions. For those who want to change it back:

change the setting, users can navigate to Instagram’s menu for “settings and activity” in their profiles, where they can update their “content preferences.” On this menu, “political content” is the last item under a list of “suggested content” controls that allow users to set preferences for what content is recommended in their feeds.

There is one good side. While we can’t see the algorithms used to classify content as “political”, creators can check their own status and publicize issues:

Meta’s blog noted that “professional accounts on Instagram will be able to use Account Status to check their eligibility to be recommended based on whether they recently posted political content. From Account Status, they can edit or remove recent posts, request a review if they disagree with our decision, or stop posting this type of content for a period of time, in order to be eligible to be recommended again.”

Personally I wouldn’t be affected by this since it only affects recommendations, but the issue is that Meta gets to decide what is “political”.

Nearly everything has a political component to it, and this can be an excuse for hiding content that the company doesn’t want as many people to see. Activism for example is “political”.

Having the option to set the flag would be nice for those who want a filtered feed. I’m just suspicious I guess ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

The other movie was pretty well received, I think people would be interested in more world building

As an idiot currently blundering around in it, I don’t think this is something we can gatekeep, nor can we try and do it. It’s just something that will happen

The great thing about the fediverse is that people have control over which instances they are around, and there will always be some more isolated ones if that’s what you prefer

I would say that it does, but whether you actually save calories by doing that instead of getting rid of it is unknown. I’d say to just do what feels comfortable to you. You can probably make up those calories easily in other ways

Super cool, the worry of an instance dying will make people avoid smaller instances and pick the big stable ones. Having this safety net should help balance things out.

I wonder if this could work with threadiverse communities. We’ve seen communities disappear when an instance goes down. Could the communities also be saved like this?

I get very annoyed when I’m looking for something that should be listed, but instead it tries to search for it in Edge (or now copilot).

I have never wanted to use the device search as a way to search the web.

In particular, I think there are parts of this guide that are relevant to how we introduce new technologies to other people, be it privacy tools or the Fediverse.

Googling the word with quotes brings up a Lemmy thread first, I thought that was interesting.

Replying to the edit, I think you misunderstand what the UN call was for

It’s not saying that we should arbitrarily defend objects globally. It’s not saying that the artifacts or texts are above criticism or academic scrutiny.

It’s recommending that countries take measures to

prevent and prosecute acts and advocacy of religious hatred that constitute incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence

It’s saying that countries need to update their laws to address when someone does an action in order to incite discrimination, hostility, or violence.

It’s something you recognize when you see it, and it’s about the intent of the person doing the action.

When a group of people considers a symbol to be special/beloved, it’s bad when someone else destroys that symbol in a performative way. Very often it comes from a place of hate, and it’s done to try and incite a reaction. This would include actions such as vandalizing pride flags, places of worship, places where a group tends to gather, etc.

We don’t need any more of any of that.

This is also different from having good faith discussions about the issues. Having discussions is actually productive, holding burning events does the opposite

I think part of the issue is that you can undo the deletion of your own posts, which is a nice feature to have.

Maybe what we need is:

• hide: does what “delete” does now
• delete: with a warning that the action is irreversible

Add in a warning when posting or commenting that hiding/deleting may not federate
