  • Yeah, I always try to improve my everyday carry a little bit here and there… a better wallet, a nice compact pen, a little gadget that fits in my pocket, a pocket knife, etc. I try to carry as much as I can without carrying an extra pouch or bag or feeling like my pockets are stuffed and bulging, so I really prioritize small functional things that fit in my wallet or on my keychain. If I’m feeling spendy, I usually go for that and can find something for ~$30 bucks. Then I get to be excited for it to arrive in the mail.

  • This is interesting, especially since we haven’t heard much from ISIS in several years and that the US warned Russia about it ahead of time.

    Now, I’ll just speculate.

The US was helping Ukraine. Then Iran backed an attack by Hamas on Israel, which gave the US a distraction to deal with from supporting Ukraine. There was speculation that Russia pushed Iran to push Hamas to do the attack for this very reason.

Now, US intelligence could be playing the same game. With this attack, Russia has a hard time selling Ukraine as the biggest threat to Russian people. They’re under attack by ISIS terrorists. Surely, this will take some focus off of the Ukraine war and put pressure on Putin to counter ISIS. Somehow the US did have foreknowledge of the attack…

Of course this is all just speculation, but if we’re trying to think like covert ops and play 4D chess, it could make sense.

  • Had student loan debt and the chance to become a public servant at the beginning of my career. It would’ve meant making regular payments for a long time until eventually the debt was forgiven. It also would’ve meant sticking with the government and the low government salary. I decided I didn’t trust the government to actually forgive the loans and why make that bet when the government salary is low anyway?

Under Trump, the DoE basically thumbed its nose at people in this program and claimed only some handful actually qualified. I took that as a sign that I was right.

In any case, I’m glad to see people actually getting their loan forgiveness, even if it is a bad deal.

  • They settled in a town called Laie on Oahu and built a BYU campus there. Right next to the university they set up a massive tourist attraction called the Polynesian Cultural Center. They have five mock villages set up, each representing one Polynesian cultural group. They put on demonstrations and performances. There is also a big show in the evening with dancing. The whole spectacle is run by Polynesian students from one of the cultures who are receiving a free education from BYU in exchange for staffing the PCC. The PCC also poses as a recruiting operation for the Mormon church as they try to “lure” tourists to the temple to learn more about Mormonism as part of the villages tour.

The whole situation is very bizarre and while it is cool that the students are getting an education, they are working really hard for it. It’s possibly a bit predatory in that way and all wreaks a bit of cultural appropriation.
