  • When I said “I think it’s possible” it was within the context of being able to maintain production, and economic output. Productivity per worker has increased between 30-50% within the last 40 or so years.

When I said “utterly impossible” It was in regards to corporation control and influence in the government, as well as corporation sympathy with republicans. Considering they are obstructionists that will even deadlock mutually beneficial laws and acts, they would 100% kill something they actually oppose.

Even with most Americans in support of Roe vs Wade, that was shut down.

People get up in arms about it because

    1. Superiority complex

    2. Supporting Apple hurts all tech consumers

To further elaborate on number 2, apple is very anti-consumer. They hike prices, overprice upgrades, lock down hardware, prevent repair etc. This spills over to android phones as everybody rushes to copy Apple. People get pretty pissed that their own devices are becoming enshittified due to Apple’s success. They then blame and attack apple consumers.

It’s not justified at all, but I hope people understand it now. People are pro-consumer, Apple isn’t.

  • For me, definitely. I will have to mention that my exercise comes from a hobby, hand tool woodworking, and that exercise in the gym hasn’t helped.

It’s definitely a fantastic feeling to pour all of your effort into a task and see the fruits of your labour. It feels really good to work with extreme determination, nearly passing out several times and finally seeing the finished project. Then immediately zonking out.

It also helped me a lot because working out to exhaustion makes my sleep a lot more consistent, which for a long time was a major factor in my depression.

For me, gym exercise wasn’t very helpful because (to me) it felt arbitrary. Lift this thing X times, do this motion X times, etc. When it’s a hobby there’s a clear start, beginning and end goal, and it’s much more satisfying in my opinion.

The doomsday clock is very misleading. People assume that, because it is managed by scientists and is widely credited by different agencies, that it is quantifiably measured.

The truth is that the clock is entirely subjective and basically based off of the scientist’s vibes. Of course a subjective measurement system, spanning over dozens of scientists for damn near 100 years is going to be extremely inaccurate.

Due to human psychology, negative emotions such as fear, anger, shame and anxiety are much stronger than positive emotions. All news outlets heavily abuse this fact, since it gains most traction. Many people use this too, to gain traction to their posts, or gain more influence.

I would recommend you unplug, and focus on hobbies or work that aren’t related to the internet. Over time the internet has become increasingly hostile in a bid to capture more attention than competitors. Personally I like to avoid it when I can these days, despite working in tech.

Unfortunately you will probably be breaking a few laws by doing so. The trash is still school property and taking them could also break certain privacy laws (privacy being one of the main causes to toss these things).

That being said if there is an electronic recycling center near you I would check that out, and contact the people there. You can find tons of decent computers with 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gen Intel processors. You can probably scrounge ram from any broken or spare computers there too, but used ddr3 ram is dirt cheap.

You can also make a buck by reselling some of the collectible vintage hardware these centers usually get.

I actually work at a computer store where all of our stock are donations that would have been tossed lol. Recently we got 24x (as in 24 COMPUTERS) with xeon gold, 32gb ram and 2tb SSD EACH. it’s absolutely insane what people are willing to toss

My mother’s work place did the same. Keeping it? Wiping it? Taking it out to the parking lots and shooting the drives? Nope. Straight to scrap, all of them. Same thing with almost all of the (public) schools I’ve been to. In fact my teacher, knowing I was in tech, dug some out of the scrap bin and I refurbished them for the class, as he was desperately short. To my surprise they were thinkpads with i7’s and 8gb of ram each in like 2017.

Utterly crazy how people are so willing to junk their computers for basically no reason .

  • My mother has a lot of problems with iPhones but it’s probably because she isn’t very tech savvy. I use android and work in the computer industry, and I’ve had fairly few problems, but that’s because I work in the computer industry lol.

That being said trying to use iCloud, email, and so much of the iOS and Mac UI makes me want to tear my hair out, and troubleshooting is definitely harder on apple devices.

  • They are highly sympathetic to the Russian federation and the CCP. Making criticisms to either will get your account banned from Lemmy.ml.

In my opinion, it is reasonable to say that China is a fascist state due to its genocide of Uyghur people, language and culture. I also believe it is reasonable to label Russia as a fascist state, due to the kidnapping of Ukrainian children to Russia, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed towards the Ukrainian people and the banning of the Ukrainian language in Russian occupied schools. These both show clear intent to both eliminate people and their culture.
