People are aging more slowly than in the past, we have better information on how to take care of ourselves. But there is wide variation when you get older. I will say though, that I still feel really good in my mid 50s, nothing hurts, I am still strong and healthy and think that would have been less usual even just 20 years ago.

Everyone in my family has voicemail message that says “Sorry I missed your call, I don’t check voicemail, please text.”

I hate phone calls. Never answered the phone before the rise of cell phones, avoided getting a cell phone until they were wee computers, because the last thing I want is to be perpetually available by phone, still don’t answer the phone.

  • Absolutely YES. I hate running but it works better for anxiety than anything, in terms of immediate relief. Just put on your shoes and run. Get exhausted and your mind will relax. Power yoga has helped over the longer term, but is not as quick, it’s more like prevention.

Dancing is hella therapeutic as well, can really help you bring up and process emotions, and if you can do it to exhaustion, works like running does but with the added advantage of engaging your mind while doing it, so you don’t think as much.

I have relied on exercise to manage anxiety for about 30 years now. It does absolutely work.

ETA: I don’t know if it would help depression and it didn’t solve my mom’s bipolar issues, she was always fit. Nothing is magic. But for ‘simple’ anxiety I have not found anything to work better than physical exercise to exhaustion. Get tired, sleep better, feel more relaxed and grounded.

  • People accrue debt during bad times then have to pay it during good times, but often couldn’t have made it through to those good times without spending on the way. I am still paying off the accrued deficit from when we had a family of 4 living on 15k a year, then later 6 on 50k, we were always so close to ok but not quite and year after year it accrues. Well during that time I went to university, made more but still not enough for a family, eventually split with my ex, now in a functional 2 earner plus couple of part time jobs situation we are sorta raking it in now but both still paying for when we were not.

People who make good money probably didn’t always make good money. People who raised other people also take a financial hit for awhile. I’m assuredly better off from having kids, wouldn’t have bothered getting the degree and better job without them, but the payoff is slow not immediate.

  • The dead mall inside the city here became mostly parking for the stadium, with a couple of businesses and a city bus transfer center. The one to the east became an office park.

I would like to see the upper levels of office buildings converted to housing and the ground floor to retail, couple floors between left for offices.

Malls I would like them to become city parks with skate parks (they usually have more up and down than the rest of the city) and buildings with libraries and community space and events rental space.

I don’t want any of this as much as I want a healthy mass transit system, safe bike routes, and safe walking routes. But I do want the buildings converted and it is possible, I used to work for a construction company that did nothing but renovation and repurposing of commercial spaces.

  • Entertainers. That is a job. I had a dance teacher who taught dance, danced professionally, did singing telegram deliveries, dressed in costume for historical tours at old places, she was just an all around entertainer, that was her job.

Influencer is different, as I understand it, that is more like the content itself is advertising. Like a social media department at a company might hire them. I guess that is also a job, but most people don’t want to watch a ten or twenty minute ad.

  • OP, my adult daughter came to my house one day and I offered her filtered chilled water and fresh baked sourdough with butter - fanciest bread and water ever. Bread to me is magic, I make sourdough only so it’s literally made of flour, water, a little salt and time. How does it get such flavor?

Anything with courses feels so luxurious to me. We don’t eat that way in my house because we (mostly I myself) cook for ourselves and want to sit together to eat. Getting served small plates in succession is so labor intensive and also a nice way to eat. We did this at a small fancy restaurant once - we ordered several things and the waiter served them one at a time, for us to share. Best ever way to eat as a couple or small group.
