I went to a high-falutin’ work dinner earlier this evening to meet some corporate leaders I hope can help me find my next job. Impressive titles and stuffy corporate etiquette and the whole nine yards. I thought I did well enough. As we’re all leaving and going to our respective cars, a goose comes after one of them. Now this would be a different story had it been a turkey, but I am not scared of some flappy footed goose. Without much thought I jumped in to draw the goose away from the lady until she got into her car. Then I remember yeah, I am a working professional lady and yelling profanities at water fowl is not the look I had been working to achieve all evening.

I have gotten multiple texts from them already this evening congratulating me on my “quick thinking”. Not a one of them will forget me now, I can probably leverage this into a job so long as I accept I will be known as the Goose Enforcer.

I got anxiety instead of depression. My mom had severe depression, so I spent most of my years growing up anxious that I too would be depressed. I would describe it more as terror than listnessness.

So I don’t get hopeless and stop, I get a bit energized and overreact in a way I sometimes later regret. I sometimes get “analysis paralysis” and have worked over the years to recognize when that is happening and to get over it. And during the stretches I took medications, they were different from what a person diagnosed with depression would be prescribed.

Yep, I use phrases for passwords like for managers and phones. I craft them not just for ease of remembering, but also ease of typing. I don’t care that it’s a really long phrase if I can type it quickly.

Is it just the one class that’s online or are you fully remote from the physical school? I did computer lab monitoring for a while in college, also worked at the campus library for a stint. Super easy, work study, 95% of the time I was doing homework.

Oppenheimer was 3 hours long. We watched it from home over three nights with plenty of food, booze, pee breaks, etc. I could pause and rewind observe a visual effect again or rehear a piece of dialogue. Watching from home is a superior experience most of the time.

The exception is when socializing is part of the experience. Like watching Rocky Horror or going to an outdoor screening where people are milling about between picnic blankets chatting and sharing food or theaters that have an established etiquette of talking and shouting more than you would find in other theaters, typically associated with black neighborhoods but not always. Not your generic AMC theaters.

My dad would always cook up liver and onions when Mom was away. He loved the dish, the smell made her retch. So he took advantage, cooked it up early while she was away so the house would air out by the time she returned.

What do you do (or avoid doing) out of courtesy to your wife that you can enjoy while she’s away and unaffected?

Teach kids about AI tools. Heck, give them homework assignments that require them to use it. Lay out clear expectations that they own the work they submit; an AI writing hallucinations is not an acceptable excuse. AI tools aren’t going to go away, best to prepare them well while they’re still in school.

There is a formal process for renouncing US citizenship, involving interviews and forms and bureaucracy. It doesn’t give the person relief on existing tax obligations.

The “ex-pats” I know, every single one didn’t go all the way through the renouncing process because it’s a pain in the ass. They do still file taxes, but I don’t think any of them actually have to pay anything.

It goes even further back than I was aware, to 2003.

My sticking point in your original statement is that all this “sensitivity” is new, allegedly aligning with covid and George Floyd and BLM. That’s not the case and it minimizes the decades of work people have spent trying to influence language to be more inclusive.

3 years ago may be when pearl-clutchers started reaching a critical volume to where media saw the dollar signs in catering to them.

GitHub changed their terminology in ~2020, but it’s been a controversial term for years before that. I remember master/slave hard drive terminology being set aside in early 2010s. And I was just grunt level, hourly IT at the time.

I see no reason to go with #2 without assuming they just flat out hate women.

It’s been a lot longer than 3 years. My city changed policeman and fireman to police officer and firefighter almost two decades ago.

I am very skeptical of this 3 year timeframe lining up with the end of Trump’s presidency and the right leaning into this anti-woke position.
